ms10 membrane
  o v e r v i e w

This overview refers to the MG25 membrane. For a description of the MS10 membrane, see the MS10 membrane section.

MG25 is a novel membrane that permits you to grow a cell culture in a drop. This is a modified PVDF membrane, microporous and hydrophilic. It opens up significant new possibilities in cell culture studies.

The membrane is rendered unique by two key properties:

  • Aqueous solution drops when deposited on the surface of this hydrophilic membrane, while it floats as a raft on an aqueous solution (cell culture media, PBS, etc.), do not spread, nor do they siphon through the membrane. The drops maintain their original volume within the boundaries of the deposition site.

  • Exchange of solutes and bio-molecules, contained in aqueous solutions, occurs across the membrane only at the drop site. There is no lateral transport of solutes or bio-molecules within the membrane material nor on the membrane surface. The volume of the drop remains unchanged.

Additional membrane properties:

  • The membrane when floated as a 'raft' on a pool of aqueous solution remains stably floating even with many drops on its surface.
  • The membrane can also be supported on a wetted filter paper or on a gel.
  • The membrane provides a tissue culture surface for easy cultivation of adherent cells, without the need to pretreat the surface.
  • The membrane is transparent at the drop site and cells can be easily viewed under a microscope.
  • The membrane is easily sterilized by treatment with 70% ethyl alcohol.
  • The membrane is heat stable to 100 C.
